Join Our Raw Milk Herd Share Program

Are you looking for raw cow milk in Northern Virginia?

How it works:

At Heritage Springs, we offer a limited number of herd shares for those who want to enjoy fresh, unpasteurized cow milk from our pasture-raised jersey cow.

Under Virginia law, the only way to obtain raw cow milk is for you to own a cow. If your HOA would frown on you having a cow in your yard, you’re in luck- our HOA is cool with us having cows in ours.

You can purchase a share in our herd which entitles you to a portion of the milk our herd produces each week. We take care of the cow- feed, boarding, medical expenses here at our farm in exchange for a monthly fee.

What you receive:

Weekly pickup of fresh, raw cow milk with cream on top (A full share is 1 gallon per week & half share is 1/2 gallon per week)

Information on how the herd is raised and milked

Regular communication and updates from our farm

Why you can trust Heritage Springs:

We are a small, ethical, family-run farm

We provide a clean, loving, and stress-free environment for our animals

Milk is handled with the highest sanitation standards

We have our milk lab-tested regularly to ensure it is as safe to drink as possible

How much does it cost?

There are three costs associated with participating in our herd share:

  1. Buy in fee- this is the purchase price for a share of the herd. The buy in cost for a full or half share is $1. Yes. It is only $1. This fee is not for us to make money, but to be legally compliant.

  2. The monthly boarding fee- this is the price for caring for your share of the herd. It is the cost of caring for our cows. Bedding, hay in the winter, medical needs, and the delicious cow snacks our cows have come to expect.

-Full share boarding fee is $65/ month*

-Half share boarding fee is $35/ month

*Herd share members who purchase 3 or more full shares receive a 10% discount on all shares

  3. Jar deposits. The jar deposits are refunded if you choose to discontinue your herd share and return the clean jars to us. We require everyone to have 2 jars (one for us to fill for your next pickup and one for you to take home). Each jar deposit is $15.

What can I do with raw cow milk?

-Drink it! Either shake it up and mix the cream into the milk or skim the milk off and drink it that way- both ways are delicious.

-Use skimmed cream to make butter and ice cream

-Make delicious, thick, creamy yogurt

-Cheese!

-Keep a clabber culture on your counter to thicken recipes or add to smoothies

-Make fresh kefir milk (kefir grains LOVE raw milk)

Is raw milk safe?

Raw milk is safe when the animals are healthy and the milk is produced under sanitary conditions. We invite you to make an appointment to observe our milking practices before you purchase a share in our herd so you are confident that our milk is clean and safe to drink. Check out the Raw Milk Institute for more information on the safety of raw milk.
